The Catholic Diocese of Greensburg is auditing accounts at Church of the Seven Dolors in Yukon after several parishioners raised concerns over several accounts there last week.

Diocese spokesman Jerry Zufelt said an independent auditing firm has started reviewing the parish's finances after concerns were raised during an April 6 meeting.

"Diocesan officials held a meeting with the parish pastoral council and the parish financial council," Zufelt said.

Zufelt said law enforcement officials are not involved in the review.

"We need to find out what exactly is going on. If there is a need (for law enforcement), we will make that determination," he added.

In a prepared statement, the diocese said all parish business is being administered by the Rev. Kenneth Zaccagnini, pastor of St. Barbara Parish in Harrison City.

The Rev. Emil Payer continues to handle pastoral duties, according to Zufelt.

A report will be made to the parish after the financial review is completed and the facts are known, the statement said.

Zufelt said there is no timetable for completion of the review.

The diocesan newspaper, The Catholic Accent, reported in 2009, during the church's centennial celebration, that the parish "grew out of the immigrants who settled in Yukon, a mining camp."

The predominantly Slovak group sent a letter to Bishop John Francis Regis Canevin of Pittsburgh on Aug. 29, 1909, requesting that the parish be established. The bishop established the parish later that year.

The church was completed in 1914, and the first Mass was celebrated there on May 3, 1914.
