Broadcaster Derryn Hinch - who once spent time in jail for naming a priest on trial for child sex offences - has been given home detention for after he was found guilty of contempt of court for publicly naming sex offenders, reports the Australian.

The report said Mr Hinch would already be in jail if not for the cancer that has left his life dependent on a liver transplant.

Magistrate Charlie Rozencwajg at the Melbourne Magistrates Court agreed that living at Port Phillip Prison, on Melbourne's western fringe, would rule Mr Hinch out of getting to hospital in time if a liver became available.

He assumed Hinch's home would be approved for detention when corrections officers visit next week.

"If not for your medical condition, then we would be looking at a sentence of immediate confinement," Mr Rozencwajg said. "That should be replicated as much as possible in the home detention order, save for the medical issue."

Hinch breached four suppression orders by naming two sex offenders on his website and at a rally outside the Victorian parliament in 2008.

In 1987, Hinch spent 12 days in jail for naming a pedophile priest on trial for child sex offences.

He will appear in court for sentencing next month.
