The American Roman Catholic Priest John Corapi

John Corapi, a popular American Roman Catholic priest, has decided to leave priesthood over sexual abuse charges, slamming the church over the handling of his case.

In March, the 64-year-old was charged with sexually assaulting one of his female employees, the Huffington Post reported on Saturday.

In an audio statement posted on YouTube, Corapi refuted the allegations and blasted church officials for their "fatally flawed" handling of accusations against him.

There are "persons in authority in the Church that want me gone," the priest said.

Corapi has made numerous appearances on Eternal World Television Network, a globally broadcast Catholic TV and radio network.

He also attracted the support of many staunch followers due to protesting against liberal movements.

Corapi was addicted to cocaine and ended up in a psychiatric facility. In 1984, he decided to change his life and in 1991 was ordained as a priest by Pope John Paul II.
