Beijing, Jun 19 (PTI) Officials in China have dismissed as rumours the allegations that the chief priest of a famous temple here was arrested for soliciting prostitutes.

"We seriously condemn the rumour since it was not only defamation of Shi himself, but also harmed the image of the famous shrine and even the reputation of Chinese Buddhism," China"s State Administration for Religious Affairs said in a statement.

The statement asked religious figures, Buddhism believers and the internet users not to believe and spread the rumour further.

Rumours that the chief priest of the fifth century Shaolin Temple, Shi Yongxin, was caught soliciting prostitutes have been in circulation over the Chinese online microblog network since May.

However, Shi denied it as an attempt to smear his image.

The Mahayana Buddhist monastery located on Mount Song is famous for its association with the Chinese martial arts, particularly Shaolin Kung Fu.
