Bishop Finn's Conservative Views Aren't the Problem By Yael T. Abouhalkah Kansas City Star June 18, 2011 http://voices.kansascity.com/entries/conservative-bishop-finn-should-protect-children-more-not-less/ Woody Cozad, my conservative colleague on the “Ruckus” public affairs show, contends some liberal Catholics are attacking Bishop Robert Finn more because of his conservative religious leanings and less because of his actions in sexual abuse cases involving children. Cozad has a point - a small one - because I’m sure the recent problems involving abuse of children in the local diocese has given some liberal Catholics even more reasons to criticize Finn and call for his resignation. Here’s the larger point, one I wholeheartedly ascribe to: I expected much more of a conservative bishop on this issue. In fact, a conservative bishop should be trying even harder to look for the children of his flock. Hope liberals don’t take that the wrong way, but conservatives claim to have this reputation for being all concerned about “the children” (consider their abortion stance in the Catholic Church). Yet Finn has failed miserably to be that kind of protector for the children. Bishop Finn has earned the wrath of Catholics, not because of his conservative religious views but because of his failings in acting quickly and strongly on the matter of sexual abuse of children. |
