COUNCILLORS IN DUBLIN city have said they support a formal state apology for Madalene laundries survivors.

Kevin Keane reports in today's Irish Independent that members of Dublin City Council voted unanimously to pass a motion on the apology at last night's council meeting.

The motion, which was proposed by Sinn Féin councillor Criona Ní Dhalaigh, included a request that the Irish Government establish a statutory inquiry into abuses carried out in the laundries.

Last week, the UN Committee against Torture (UNCAT) recommended an independent inquiry should be conducted into the laundries, and expressed grave concerns "at the failure of the State to protect girls and women who were involuntarily confined between 1922 and 1996 in the Magdalene Laundries".
