Council Supports State Apology for Magdalene Abuse Irish Independent June 15, 2011 http://www.independent.ie/national-news/council-supports-state-apology-for-magdalene-abuse-2673601.html DUBLIN city councillors have voted to support a call for a formal state apology for the survivors of the Magdalene laundries, writes Kevin Keane. The council unanimously passed a motion on the matter at its meeting last night. It includes a request that the Government immediately establishes a statutory inquiry into abuses carried out by the religious orders which ran the laundries. Cllr Criona Ni Dhalaigh (Sinn Fein), who proposed the motion, said the laundries were excluded from the Murphy report because they were considered to be privately owned. She said the failure to provide any apology to date had caused additional pain and suffering to the women. |
