Who Will Replace Cardinal Rigali? My Fox Philly June 10, 2011 http://www.myfoxphilly.com/dpp/news/local_news/who-will-replace-cardinal-rigali-061011 [with video] Will the Catholic Church soon name a replacement for Cardinal Justin Rigali? An announcement could be made in the near future. The National Catholic Reporter speculated this week the announcement may be imminent , since Rigali assumed his current Philadelphia post in early June, and traditionally, changes are made seasonally in such matters. Susan Matthews from Catholic 4 Change, a group that advocates accountability at the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, appeared on our Good Day program to discuss Rigali and another big announcement by the church. Matthews said Leslie Davila, who was just named as director of Child and Youth Protection for the archdiocese, seems very qualified. Davila had worked in the Philadelphia’s district attorney’s office. However, Matthews is concerned that a bigger issue is that the archdiocese isn’t addressing the recommendation of the grand jury, to separate victims’ assistance from the archdiocese and its lawyers. I don’t know anything, but I’ve heard some of the rumors. There are two very different names being thrown out. One is from Denver and that is Charles Chaput. … He is a very conservative archbishop,” Matthews said. “The other name I am hearing a lot is Archbishop Wilton Gregory from Atlanta. He is very progressive and he would bring out quite a change. He was instrumental in the Dallas charter of U.S. bishops, which created a lot of the good change,” she said. Gregory is African-American. Rigali had put his resignation in at the age of 75 as a matter of policy, but Matthers said the church is usually deliberate about making changes. A bigger issue, as some other recent interview guests told Fox 29 in past months, is if Rigali will be the last Cardinal to run the Philadelphia archdiocese, since church membership isn’t growing as fast in Philadelphia as in other parts of the nation. |
