The Kansas City Diocese Citizens Review Board met on Wednesday to reportedly discuss the case against Father Shawn Ratigan, who was accused of possessing child pornography.

The six member board met Wednesday afternoon but made no statements to reporters afterward.

KMBC’s Mike Mahoney reported the board would likely go to Bishop Robert Finn with any decision. Mahoney contact’s Finn’s office, where a spokesperson said Finn was out of town.

Members of a Catholic priest victims abuse group met while the diocese review board was in session. Mahoney reported the group is in the first stage of organizing a letter writing campaign.

“At some point Catholics, not just three of us, but all Catholics have to stand up and say we deserve better,” said SNAP member Abott Durosher. “When is that going to happen?”

In addition to organizing the letter writing campaign, SNAP members prepared Wednesday for a Thursday night meeting at the Northland Community Center. SNAP director David Clohessy said they have no confidence in the diocese review board.

“This is a review that is picked by the Bishop. So by definition it is not independent at all,” Clohessy said.

Father Ratigan remained in police custody Wednesday. He was arrested a few weeks ago after police discovered that child pornography was allegedly on the priest’s personal computer.

The diocese has been accused of covering up the discovery of the child porn.

Some attorneys announced Wednesday that they planned to file a lawsuit accusing Bishop Finn of concealing evidence that Ratigan was creating child pornography and being sexually inappropriate with young girls.
