Media Expert , Businesswoman Talk Show Host, Pediatrician Named to National Review Board USCCB May 26, 2011 http://www.usccb.org/comm/archives/2011/11-110.shtml WASHINGTON (May 24, 2011)—A media expert, a businesswoman/talk show host and a pediatrician have been named to the National Review Board for four-year terms, 2011-2015, beginning in June. The new members include Susan King, vice president, external affairs at Carnegie Corporation of New York; Coleen Kelly Mast, owner/manager of an international business, Respect Incorporated, and host of a twice weekly radio program giving advice on life’s problems from a Catholic perspective; and Angelo Giardino, MD, PhD, chief medical officer for the Texas Children’s Health Plan and a clinical professor of pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. Archbishop Timothy Dolan of New York made the appointments. King oversees Carnegie Corporation's external communications including its publications, website, and media and dissemination grant program. She was a journalist for 20 years and served as assistant secretary for public affairs at the Department of Labor. As a journalist, King was both an anchor and a political analyst. She worked for ABC News, served as a White House correspondent, and reported for CNN. She has won several journalism awards including Emmys and a National Women's Political Caucus award. King holds a bachelor of arts degree in English from Marymount College and a master of arts degree communications from Fairfield University. She is married and has one daughter. Mast owns and manages Respect Incorporated, an Illinois-based international company offering programs, materials, and training seminars. She has developed chastity and character education programs for teens, parents and teachers entitled Love and Life: A Christian Sexual Morality Guide for Teens. Mast also authored Sex Respect, the first public school abstinence program to be tested and approved by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Her radio program airs on EWTN radio and on Sirius Satellite Radio. She holds a master of science degree in health education from Western Illinois University and an honorary doctorate in humane letters from Quincy University. She is married and has five children. Giardino is an award-winning physician who has written extensively on child sexual abuse. Before moving to Texas he was vice president of clinical affairs and associate physician-in-chief at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children in Philadelphia and a professor of pediatrics at Drexel University. He is the author of numerous research articles and books and is a frequent guest lecturer. In addition to his medical degree, he holds a doctorate in education from the University of Pennsylvania and a master in public health degree from the University of Massachusetts. He previously served on the National Review Board, 2005-2008. He is married. Four Review Board members conclude their terms in June. They include Diane M. Knight, ACSW, CISW, current chair of the review board; Emmet M. Kenney Jr., M.D., founder of St. Sophie's, a psychiatric and addiction center in Fargo, North Dakota; Justice Robert Charles Kohm of the New York State Supreme Court; and Susan Steibe-Pasalich, PhD, a licensed clinical psychologist and director of the University Counseling Center of the University of Notre Dame. The new members will serve on the board chaired by Al J. Notzon III, whose two-year chairmanship begins in June. He recently retired after 35 years as executive director of the Alamo Area Council of Governments, a Texas association of local governments. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops established the National Review Board in 2002 as a consultative body tasked with reviewing the annual report of the Secretariat of Child and Youth Protection on the implementation of the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People. |
