It is the flawed concept at the heart of his attack on the John Jay College of Criminal Justice’s report into the causes of child sexual abuse in the Roman Catholic Church. Donohue is a homophobe and nothing less than a smoking gun showing that gays were the cause for the humiliation of the Roman Catholic Church will ever satisfy him. This is why anything he says is pretty much going to contain dozens of lies. “A homosexual is defined by his actions, not his identity.” This is wrong, of course. A man put into a situation where he is only in contact with other men will likely turn to another man to relieve his sexual tension. Humans, after all, are sexual beings, and after a while, masturbation is not enough. From prisons to monasteries, men having sex with other men in one for or another occurs. Now, that does not mean that, if there was a woman available, they would not want to have sex with her. Behavior is not what defines a lesbian woman or a gay man, but attraction. It is not so much the fact that someone will have romantic and sexual relations with someone who is of the same sex as them even if there are members of the opposite sex available. In essence, Donohue just told all those male prisoners in places like Riker’s Island that they’re gay. Ignoring the fact that the definition of ephebophilia is broadened by the report to include children who, in the 1960’s through the 1990’s would not have hit puberty at age ten, Donohue’s entire premise is built upon that flawed concept. He writes “Finally, the report says that 81 percent of the victims were male and 78 percent were postpubescent. Since 100 percent of the abusers were male, that’s called homosexuality, not pedophilia or heterosexuality.” In fact, given that altar girls were not common practice until the mid-1980’s, and contact with girls was rare, and that many of the molesters assaulted both boys and girls, his entire frothy mouthed run just does not work. Of course, when you hate a group of people so much that you believe every lie out there just to make it seem like you are better than they are, well, you’re a bigot. Donohue is the equivalent of the white supremacist who believes that Jews run the world because he read it in a book that was proven to be nothing but a hoax seventy years ago.
