7 Reasons Why Clergy Abuse Survivors Will Eventually Win Its War with the Vatican Voice from the Desert May 16, 2011 http://reform-network.net/?p=10274 Numbers of victims/survivors. Thousands of clergy sex-abuse victims are transforming themselves into survivors. They know the evil that a trusted priest or other church employee perpetrated on them. They are no longer silent. They are not afraid anymore. Technology. The Internet—especially email, YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter in the hands of abuse survivors and their advocates—is a force bigger than anything the Vatican can muster. Jesus. The martyred carpenter's sayings as transcribed in the New Testament champion the underdog and the oppressed and excoriate hypocritical men of religion. The hypocritical members of the Jewish religious establishment of the time of Jesus we read about in the gospel are prototypes. The pope and his yes men fit this prototype to a tee. Children. Survivors are pro-children because they know kids must be kept safe from predation to be able to develop psychosexually in a normal way. The Vatican, it is clear, champions the Roman Catholic celibate priesthood at the expense of the safety of children. History. The Vatican is a medieval organization hell bent on maintaining the old order while rejecting individual freedom, women's rights, and the rights of children. Truth. The survivors have the truth on their side. The truth makes them free to speak out against the stench of corruption in the Holy See and in chancelleries throughout the world. The Vatican, it is clear, lies and lies and tries like hell to keep its secrets in the closet. Leadership. Pope Benedict, Bernard Law, and Timothy Dolan are not the kind of men you want with you in a foxhole during battle. Rather give me the likes of Tom Doyle, Jeff Anderson, Barbara Blaine, Peter Isely, Rick Springer, Marci Hamilton, David Clohessy, Richard Sipe, Gary Bergeron, Barbara Dorris, Jason Berry, and scores of others too numerous to list. In the end fearless, dedicated leadership is determinative. |
