Vatican Letter Urges Clergy to Create Guidelines to Stop Sexual Abuse By Korva Coleman NPR May 16, 2011 http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/2011/05/16/136355343/vatican-letter-urges-clergy-to-create-guidelines-to-stop-sexual-abuse The Vatican published a letter today telling every Catholic conference in the world to draft guidelines to prevent sexual abuse. The Catholic News Service says Catholic bishops should have "clear and coordinated procedures for protecting children, assisting victims of abuse, dealing with accused priests, training clergy and cooperating with civil authorities." For some it's not enough. The group, Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests notes the Vatican doesn't specify a mandatory reporting requirement of an alleged sexual attack and that means vulnerable children are not safer, according to CNN. Reuters adds there's no instruction that bishops must warn their congregations about clerics who have previously molested other children. |
