A FORMER priest at St Stanislaus College in Bathurst who pleaded guilty to four counts of gross indecency with a male aged under 18, has been jailed for 15 months.

Father Kevin Francis Phillips began three concurrent nine-month terms when sentenced in the District Court on April 21.

According to the agreed statement of facts, the charges related to the abuse of a student when Phillips was an assistant chaplain at the boarding school for boys in 1990.

Judge Penelope Hock had placed a non-publication order on the case until the conclusion of the trial of the former college headmaster Peter Dwyer. He was acquitted of all charges by a jury this week.

Phillips, who went on to be in charge of several parishes in north Queensland up to the time of his arrest in 2009, disappeared from the school in the year of the offences. Complaints had been made to another teacher about a priest supplying whisky and cigarettes to students and parading naked in front of them.

A notice put up at the school had said he had ''left to take care of his seriously ill mother'' and would not return.

On the final charge of gross indecency against Phillips, the judge also imposed a nine-month sentence. It starts on October 21, with a non-parole period of three months.

Judge Hock directed that Phillips's parole not be subject to supervision, entitling him to return to Queensland on his release.
