Bishop Brian Dunn held nothing back yesterday as he went before the media to talk about his predecessor's guilty plea this week to a child pornography charge. The new head of the Diocese of Antigonish says collecting child porn is an "affront to the principle of human dignity" and added he finds any form of child sexual exploitation "repugnant". Bishop Dunn also says that prison time for Raymond Lahey is "appropriate." The Antigonish diocese, as a result of a class action lawsuit launched by victims of sexual abuse at the hands of priests, has to pay out at least $15 million and is in the process now of selling over 200 church properties to raise money for the settlement. While Bishop Dunn's comments are refreshing, many are still waiting for the Vatican to do more than just mouth words on the issue of sexual abuse by priests.

Nova Scotia Power says it hears the voices of Nova Scotians concerned about rising power rates. So the power corp says it will now not ask the Utility and Review Board for a 9% rate hike for next year and instead will see 4% increases in each of the next three years to help us cope with the ever increasing cost of electricity. Gee thanks, I think.

More proof Metro Halifax is awash in guns. Police yesterday arrested a man they were looking for on a charge of possession of stolen goods. When they arrived at the man's Fenwick Street address he was seen coming out of the house carrying a bag. A search of the bag turned up four loaded handguns and ammunition. I'd like to know where these guns came from. Were they weapons stolen from private homes in the city where police suggest most originate? Or where they guns brought into the city after being smuggled into the country from the U.S. Inquiring minds need to know.

I'm less than impressed with the blue-ribbon panel named yesterday by Speaker Gordie Gosse to review MLA's pensions in Nova Scotia. Retired Supreme Court justice David Gruchy will chair the three person panel which also includes former Utility and Review Board chairman John Morash and Ronald Smith, a former vice president with Emera, the parent company of Nova Scotia Power. I'm sure all three are very fine gentlemen, but I'm also certain they have no idea about how most Nova Scotians cope with the day to day costs of living in this province. I'm pretty sure as well all three have a pretty good pension plan to carry them through their golden years. Most Nova Scotians do not and having at least one resident in that situation on this panel would have given it more credibility. The MLA's pension plan is way too rich for our taxpayer's blood and I don't see much change coming as a result of this particular review.

Have a great weekend. Get involved. And if you're not outraged, you're not paying attention.
