Where's the crackdown on guns?? and How drunk was this guy?? Really drunk!

In light of all the gunplay in the city, I was expecting something more from yesterday's crime announcement by Justice Minister Ross Landry. Not to say the government finally proclaiming a law allowing it to seize cash, cars and such obtained through the proceeds of crime wasn't a good move, but it did virtually nothing to deal with the gun and violence problem plaguing this city. Mayor Peter Kelly isn't quite as critical, but he too shares some of that concern though he says if the money generated by seizures is invested into crime fighting measures it will certainly help. Considering the relative ineffectiveness of efforts to stop the gunplay, despite police arrests it continues unabated, perhaps this violence is now simply a part of life in Halifax, perhaps the best police can do is attempt to keep it from getting out of control. :(

Gosh, this weather is getting me down. How many days has it been since we saw the sun???

On a happier note, Bishop Raymond Lahey is in jail after pleading guilty yesterday to a child pornography charge. Did you read the list of materials they found when he was stopped at Ottawa's airport after flying back to Canada from a trip abroad? 588 images of child pornography involving boys, a number of videos involving sex with boys, pornographic writing and some personal sex toys. And this guy was a bishop!!! The Vatican issued a statement saying it condemns the sexual exploitation...especially when perpetrated against minors." Okay, but what is the Roman Catholic Church doing about it?

I'm glad Rob Bennett thinks Nova Scotia Power's plan to seek another rate increase this year is justified. But what do you expect from the six-figure salaried president of Nova Scotia Power. NS Power is going to ask the UARB for yet another rate hike while its shareholders enjoy the benefits of record profits. The power corp saw an 11% increase in earnings in 2010 so why in the hell are Nova Scotians, already paying some of the highest electrical rates in the country, going to be forced to pay even more? Oh, and not only will Nova Scotia Power ask for another rate increase, but it will also ask the Utility and Review Board to increase its guaranteed rate of return for investors. Outrageous.

Speaking of outrage, have you seen the pension amounts for some of the defeated MP's in Monday's election? The Canadian Taxpayers Federation has dug up some rather obscene figures. Defeated Bloc leader Gilles Duceppe for example, will earn over $140,000 a year in a mostly taxpayer funded pension. For the rest of his life. Several defeated BQ MP's will earn nearly $100,000 a year in pension cash. Defeated or retiring Conservatives and Liberals also stand to enjoy life to the fullest in their golden years thanks to we taxpayers, the majority of whom have no pension at all to fall back on when retiring.

So, how drunk was the fellow behind the wheel of a BMW stopped by the RCMP on the 102 near Elmsdale this week? Real drunk. The 51 year old blew a breathalyzer reading four times the legal limit. Police were so concerned about his state, they called in paramedics to keep an eye on the guy. Who are these idiots who get so drunk they can hardly be conscious, yet they get behind the wheel of a car and drive? And this guy was nabbed just before 5pm, during rush hour. They should suspend his license for life.

Have a great day. Get involved. And if you're not outraged, you're not paying attention.
