(NECN: John Moroney) - Mass was said at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross, only hours after the Catholic Church took the first step toward sainthood for Pope John Paul II.

"It's a very special occasion," said Robert Fraser of Milton, MA. "He took the place of Jesus for us."

Pope Benedict beatified his predecessor Sunday morning before 1.5 million people at Saint Peter's Square in Rome. But some Catholics oppose the move and sainthood for John Paul, given his leadership during the clergy sex abuse crisis, which started here in Boston.

"It's just another attempt by this pope to cover-up what happened during the tenure of John Paul," said Rev. Robert Hoatson, a suspended priest from West Orange, NJ. "I don't know when it's going to end."

A big highlight of the Pope's career for Catholics in Boston was his visit to the city in 1979 when he said Mass on the Common in the pouring rain.

"It was a wonderful experience," said Jim Keeney of Boston.

The Archdiocese still has the kneeler the Pope used during the historic visit. For some, a reminder of the beloved pontiff who they think helped change the church and the world during his 27-year tenure.
