A Montgomery Township priest is "angry as hell" the Archdiocese of Philadelphia asked him to help place priests into new assignments years ago without being informed of their history of sexual abuse and has written a letter to Justin Rigali requesting the Cardinal address the topic that has rocked Catholics in our region.

Rev. Msg. John Conway of Mary, Mother of the Redeemer Catholic Church, sent the letter April 4 after holding a meeting last month to explain his inclusion in a 2005 Philadelphia Grand Jury report investigating sexual abuse by the clergy.

In the letter, Conway writes he told several hundred in attendance that although his name appears in connection with his role as a regional vicar, he did not contribute to a cover-up of child sexual abuse by priests.

Conway says he was "duped" after the report suggested he willingly placed a priest in another church while knowing about his history of alleged abuse.

Addressing His Eminence, Conway writes:

"I called the meeting to assure them that, though my name appeared in the 2005 Grand Jury Report in my role as regional vicar, I did not contribute in any way to the shameful and sinful cover-up of child sexual abuse by priests. I explained to (the parishioners at the meeting) that we regional vicars, along with many others, were kept in the dark about such crimes. I told them, too, that the fact that I was asked to help in the placement of priests into new assignments without being informed of their history of sexual abuse makes me ‘angry as hell.' "
