Brown: Those Urging Me to Name Abuser "Have No Clue" By Glen Johnson Boston Globe April 19, 2011 http://www.boston.com/news/politics/politicalintelligence/2011/04/brown_those_wan.html Senator Scott Brown says people demanding he name the former counselor who allegedly sexually abused him when he attended a Cape Cod summer camp as a 10-year-old "have no clue" about working through such an episode. The Massachusetts Republican made the allegation in mid-February when released his new book, "Against All Odds." But since then, he has refused to name the camp where the alleged abuse occurred, the counselor he says abused him, or provide authorities with information for a possible prosecution. The senator has explained that he wants to move on with his life, even as critics suggest remaining silent has allowed an abuser to go unpunished and possibly victimized others. In the aftermath of Brown's revelation, attendees at Camp Good News — which fits the profile of the facility Brown described attending — have alleged sexual abuse by their counselors, and one camp employee committed suicide after the allegations. "The fact that I was able to talk about it openly has enabled others to come out and talk about things," Brown said this morning on a call to WEEI-AM's "Dennis & Callahan" show. "It’s been half a century, and it’s still difficult to talk about and work through, but the more I talk about it, the more progress I make and others make. Each person is different, and for somebody who hasn’t gone through it to be judgmental and say, ‘Hey, you know you got to do A, B, C, and D,’ shows me that they have no clue, No. 1, and the folks that are asking in the media, you know, it’s clearly politics at its worst, trying to get a story and I think people know that’s what it’s about. And that’s really kind of sad that they’re going to use something like this for political purposes.” Elsewhere during the interview, Brown revealed there are plans for a paperback version of his book. He did so as co-host Gerry Callahan suggested Brown may have not written part of the autobiography because one section describes how Brown "shot" 27 points in one basketball game, rather than "scored" them — terminology an athlete such as the senator would have been more likely to use. "Obviously, that’s an editor’s issue and I’ll be sure to pick it up in the softcover copy," the senator said.Brown also confessed to being nervous before throwing out the first pitch at yesterday's Red Sox game. "I was down in the JFK (federal building) basement or the garage yesterday morning at 6:30 a.m. winging it in there," said Brown. "Oh yeah, the first five were strike, strike, strike; the next five, off the wall, broke the light. It was the most nerve-wracking thing I’ve done in a while.” Glen Johnson can be reached at johnson@globe.com Follow him on Twitter @globeglen. |
