Conte is the founder of the Bay Area Laboratory Cooperative (BALCO), a candy store for performance-enhancing drugs used by jocks. . .The book hasn’t yet hit the streets, but a local Catholic Group has already arranged to bring noted New Orleans author Jason Berry here on June 14 to discuss his newly-penned work, “Render Unto Rome.” The independent lay reform group, Voice of the Faithful, is organizing the event set for Schlafly’s Tap Room. The book is about the byzantine and increasingly controversial finances of the Catholic church. Berry is the award-winning journalist who wowed a Maplewood audience two years ago with his documentary, “Vows of Silence,” about the world’s most high profile child molesting cleric, “Fr. Marcial Maciel, who was this close to the late John Paul II. . .Mark Cuban has reportedly announced that his company’s Landmark Theaters may be put up for sale. Landmark movie houses here are the Plaza-Frontenac Cinema, Tivoli and Hi-Pointe.
