Chilean Police Seize Vatican Documents on Priest Suspended for Abuse Catholic Culture April 18, 2011 http://www.catholicculture.org/news/headlines/index.cfm?storyid=10022 Chilean authorities have searched the office of a lawyer representing a priest who had been charged with sexual abuse, and seized documents pertaining to a confidential Vatican investigation. Father Fernando Karadima had been the defendant in a civil suit in Chile, but the case was dismissed for lack of evidence. However, a separate Vatican investigation resulted in the priest's suspension from ministry. Reasoning that the Vatican had evidence of the priest's guilt, the civil case was re-opened and a judge authorized a search of the attorney's office. Church officials had previously refused to turn over the documents related to the Vatican investigation, citing its confidentiality. |
