Cloyne Report Cleared for Publication The Journal April 8, 2011 http://www.thejournal.ie/justice-minster-to-seek-directions-on-cloyne-abuse-report-117756-Apr2011/
MOST OF THE Cloyne report on clerical child sex abuse in the Catholic diocese can be published following an order by the president of the High Court. The justice minister Alan Shatter had applied to the High Court today for directions on the publication of a report on the handling of the clerical child sex abuse scandal in Cloyne, RTE reports. The president of the court, Justice Nicholas Kearns prohibited, until mid-July at the earliest, sections of the publication that refer to one priest so as not to prejudice the man’s trial. In a statement Shatter said it was now necessary for counsel for both parties to agree what deletions are necessary before arrangements are made for the publication of the report “as soon as practicable.” The report follows a two-year investigation into the handling of the allegations of child sex abuse in the Catholic diocese of Cloyne in Co Cork. The investigation also included the handling of child sex abuse in the Dublin Archdiocese. The report by circuit court judge Yvonne Murphy deals with allegations of abuse made against 19 priests over a 13-year period to 2009. The report had been delayed with the commission of investigation given a two month extension last October. It was eventually submitted to the previous Justice Minister in December but will only now be published. A previous investigation by the National Board for Safeguarding Children found that child protection practices in the diocese were inadequate and dangerous. |
