A priest who doubles as mayor of a small town in Paraguay has acknowledged fathering a child with a woman in his former parish.

The secretary for San Lazaro Mayor Celso Ovelar says he has reached a settlement with the woman. The mother says he had been giving her about $70 a month. Now that Ovelar's paternity of the 1-year-old boy is public, she says he agreed to pay her more, and give her a motorcycle as well.

Ovelar tried to resign as priest in December to run for mayor. His secretary Gustavo Maldonado said Monday that the church hasn't let him go.

Paraguay's news media are comparing the case to bishop-turned-president Fernando Lugo, who was accused by three women of fathering their children.
