Important Deadline Approaching in Canada's Indian Residential School Settlement CNW March 29, 2011 http://www.newswire.ca/en/releases/archive/March2011/30/c7711.html September 19, 2011 is the Deadline for former Indian Residential Schools students to apply for a Common Experience Payment (CEP). On September 19, 2007 the Indian Residential Schools Settlement became effective. At the time, it was estimated that 80,000 former students were alive in 2007. As of January 1, 2011, Common Experience Payments have been issued to 76,623 former students. The application deadline is now approaching. The Common Experience Payment is a payment made under the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement to former students who lived at a recognized Indian Residential School under the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement and who were alive on May 30, 2005. Payments are $10,000 for the first school year (or part of a school year) plus $3,000 for each additional school year (or part of a school year). To apply for a Common Experience Payment, eligible former students must please complete and submit an application form by September 19, 2011. An application form is available by calling 1-866-879-4913, at the www.residentialschoolsettlement.ca website or by visiting a Service Canada Centre. Service Canada staff members are available to help applicants complete the CEP application form. The list of recognized Indian Residential Schools has been updated. Six Indian Residential Schools have been added; decisions regarding a number of other schools are in progress. A complete and updated list of recognized residential schools is available at the settlement website. Those that have already applied do not need to submit a new application. Applicants who have not received a decision, or have questions about their CEP application should call the toll-free number below. Applications for a payment under the Independent Assessment Process are due in 2012. The Independent Assessment Process (IAP) is a separate out-of-court process for the resolution of claims of sexual abuse, serious physical abuse, and other wrongful acts suffered at residential schools. The IAP is a complex process and it is strongly recommended that you hire a lawyer if you wish to submit an IAP application. CEP and IAP are separate processes and former students may apply for the CEP, or for the IAP, or for both the CEP and IAP. The deadline to apply for an IAP payment is September 19, 2012. More information on both processes is available at 1-866-879-4913 and at the www.residentialschoolsettlement.ca website. The IRS Crisis Line (1-866-925-4419) provides immediate and culturally appropriate counselling support to former students who are experiencing distress.
