Le Moyne Sponsors Four-day Program Examining Catholic Sex-abuse Scandal The Post-Standard March 19, 2011 http://www.syracuse.com/news/index.ssf/2011/03/le_moyne_sponsors_four-day_pro.html A four-day symposium on the American and Irish clerical sexual abuse crisis begins Monday at Le Moyne College. The journalistic, legal, pastoral, political and theological sides of the scandal will be covered in programs that run through Thursday on the fourth floor of Reilly Hall. The school’s Sanzone Center for Catholic Studies and Theological Reflection will sponsor these free sessions: - Monday, 5 p.m. “Reporting the Unspeakable: Journalists Discuss Their Coverage of the U.S. and Irish Clerical Sexual Abuse Scandals.” Patsy McGarry, religious affairs correspondent for The Irish Times, and Walter Robinson, distinguished professor of journalism at Northeastern University and former editor of the Boston Globe spotlight investigative team, which won the 2003 Pulitzer Prize for public service. Moderated by Michael Streissguth, professor of communication and film studies. - Tuesday, 6:30 p.m. “Holding the Tensions: A Spiritual Response to Clergy Sexual Abuse.” Kathy Coffey-Guenther, director of Ignatian Programs at the Faber Center for Ignatian Spirituality and Office of Mission and Ministry at Marquette University and co-chair of the Community Advisory Board for clergy sexual abuse issues in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Milwaukee. Moderated by Christina B. Michaelson, associate professor of psychology and acting director of the Center for Peace and Global Studies. - Wednesday, 4 p.m. “The Ryan Report, State Complicity, and the Magdalene Laundries.” James Smith, assistant chair and associate professor of English at Boston College. Moderated by Kate Costello-Sullivan, associate professor of English and director of the Irish Literature Program. - Thursday, 6:30 p.m. “Lessons to Be Learned: The American and Irish Child Sexual Abuse Crises — Where They Will Take Us?” Nicholas P. Cafardi, dean emeritus and professor of law at Duquesne University and former member of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ National Review Board for the Protection of Children and Youth.
