Lorraine and I are in Singapore waiting to take another bucket cruise, this one from Singapore to Beijing.

This evening (Friday) Lorraine needed sleep and I needed Italian food, so I went to Garibaldi’s on the hotel’s recommendation.

The waitress assigned to my table was a young (about 30 years old) “guest worker” from the Philippines. I told her my stomach was on the fritz. She recommended excellent minestrone, adequate fettuccini with tomato sauce, and great chamomile tea with honey and biscotti for dunking. I added a glass of wine, which was a mistake.

Before she brought the check I asked her if she was Catholic. She said, yes, most Philippine people are Catholic. I asked her what she thought about clerical sex abuse of children. She said it happens everywhere. I asked if she thought the bishops were covering up sex abuse by priests. She said yes, they have to; otherwise people wouldn’t have any confidence in what they are being taught.

The young woman from the Philippines applied blue-collar common sense to the whole sex abuse/cover up phenomenon that many others and I obsess about.

What is the lesson here?

The lesson is: Don’t expect church hierarchs to cry uncle and admit they’ve covered up.

Common sense says it just ain’t gonna happen.
