We are extremely disappointed in the response by the Archdiocese of Seattle in announcing the removal of this priest from ministry. The most egregious error we see is that church officials are encouraging other potential victims to contact them. We believe victims should be reporting their abuse to police and prosecutors, not church officials. Especially in light of revelations by a Grand Jury in Philadelphia made public in Feb 2011 we believe it is likely that victims who contact church officials will be further injured. The grand jury report made clear that victims' assistance ministry in Philadelphia is a sham and is actually used to further the agenda of church officials to defend church employees and protect the reputation of church officials. We suspect the same policies are followed in Seattle. Church officials should also explain when they learned about the allegations, where the alleged predator is being housed today and who is monitoring him to ensure he has no contact with children. We call on the Archbishop to encourage anyone who suspects, witnessed or experienced abuse by church employees to report it to police. We also ask that he disclose the identities of all priests who have worked in this archdiocese who have admitted or been credibly accused of sexual abuse with a child and post the names and work histories on the Archdiocesan website, including those who are members of a religious community. http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2014493567_priest15m.html Priest placed on leave following abuse complaint A Catholic priest has been placed on administrative leave following an allegation that he abused a minor at a Lacey parish in the 1980s. By Seattle Time staff A Catholic priest has been placed on administrative leave following an allegation that he abused a minor in a Lacey parish in the 1980s. The Rev. Edward Receconi, a member of the Benedictine order, is alleged to have abused the minor while he served at Sacred Heart Parish, according to the Seattle Archdiocese, which said it was informed of the allegation by an attorney. Seattle Archdiocese spokesman Greg Magnoni said Receconi's superior at St. Martin's Abbey has placed Receconi on administrative leave, pending investigation. Receconi most recently filled in as needed on weekends at parishes in the archdiocese. Magnoni did not immediately know where he most recently served. Neither the superior at the abbey nor Receconi could immediately be reached for comment. In addition to Sacred Heart, where he served from 1984 to 1986, Receconi served at St. Edward Parish in Shelton from 1987 to 1993 and Holy Rosary Parish in Tacoma from 1995 to 1996. The archdiocese is asking anyone with knowledge of sexual abuse or misconduct to call 1-800-446-7762.
