CHARGES have been dropped against a Catholic priest who was arrested on suspicion of abusing a child.

Father Geoff Hilton, who is the priest at St Osmund’s in Long Lane, Breightmet, was arrested on November 6 in connection with an alleged incident at a church in Manchester in the 1980s.

He had been on bail since his arrest, but police have now decided to take no further action.

The allegation related to a boy aged eight or nine and was alleged to have happened in St Bernard’s RC Church, Burnage, where Fr Hilton served before moving to Bolton.

The 54-year-old former policeman has been put on administrative leave by the Catholic Church since his arrest.
