Sacred Heart's Mccormick Identified Among 21 Suspended Priests By Jenny Dehuff Times Herald March 9, 2011 http://timesherald.com/articles/2011/03/09/news/doc4d77f2a91ae11482746156.txt Amid the names of the 21 priests who have been suspended by the Archdiocese of Philadelphia is a man who hails from a Swedesburg parish. The Rev. Andrew D. McCormick of Sacred Heart Rectory is among the group of priests Cardinal Justin Rigali suspended Wednesday. McCormick was ordained in 1982. Calling the ordeal “a great evil,” Rigali chided the acts of the local clergymen who allegedly engaged in the sexual abuse of young boys. On the Archdiocese website, Rigali issued a press release announcing he had placed 21 priests on administrative leave. The action follows an initial examination of both the substantive allegations of sexual abuse of children and the process by which those allegations were reviewed. “These have been difficult weeks since the release of the grand jury report,” Rigali wrote. “Difficult most of all for victims of sexual abuse, but also for all Catholics and for everyone in our community.” The grand jury report identified 36 cases of indecency involving priests with children. Also included in the mix of those disciplined is the Rev. Robert W. Povish, chaplain of Graterford State Correctional Institute and cleric of St. Eleanor Rectory in Collegeville. Povish was ordained in 1990. From the Lansdale area, the Rev. Msgr. Joseph L. Logrip, chaplain of St. Mary’s Manor and St. Stanislaus Rectory was also named. Logrip had been active in the priesthood since 1972. “I wish to express again my sorrow for the sexual abuse of minors committed by any members of the church, especially clergy,” wrote Rigali. “I am truly sorry for the harm done to the victims of sexual abuse, as well as to the members of our community who suffer as a result of this great evil and crime.” The Rev. Leonard N. Peterson of St. Maria Goretti parish in Hatfield was also deemed incapacitated in his ministry, as was the Rev. Zachary W. Navit, director of the Office for Special Projects and Closures for the Archdiocese and part-time parochial vicar at Our Lady of Guadalupe Rectory in Doylestown. Navit was formerly at the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary (BVM) on Trooper Road in West Norriton. Peterson and Navit were ordained in 1967 and 1994, respectively. Rigali, in his press release, made certain to affirm Wednesday’s administrative leaves were “interim measures,” and “not in any way final determinations or judgments.” The Associated Press contributed to this report.
