Institutional abuse - NI inquiry to be held

Survivors of historical institutional abuse in Northern Ireland were due to take part today in the first consultation with a taskforce set up to decide the format and remit of an abuse inquiry.

Survivors of historical institutional abuse in Northern Ireland were due to take part today in the first consultation with a taskforce set up to decide the format and remit of an abuse inquiry.

Today's meeting was to take place in Armagh, with further consultations being held in Belfast and Derry this week.

Abuse survivor Paul Toner said the consultations were intended to give victims the chance to have their say on the shape the inquiry will take.

Last December, the Stormont Executive announced that an inquiry into institutional abuse would be held following intensive lobbying of ministers by victims.

The taskforce is to report to the Stormont Assembly by July with the inquiry itself getting under way later this year.
