A federal judge has ordered a former priest to return to his native Ireland to face charges that he sexually abused young boys in the 1970s and early '80s.

Patrick Joseph McCabe has denied the charges and fought extradition since surrendering to U.S. authorities in July 2010, after Irish authorities charged him with nine counts of sexual abuse.

Irish officials say McCabe admitted to investigators in 2007 that young boys dressed in uniforms and ties sexually aroused him. He further told them he obtained "satisfaction" from embracing young boys but denied abusing anyone.

On Tuesday, U.S. Magistrate Judge Nandor Vadas found the Irish charges credible and ordered the 74-year-old sent back to Dublin to stand trial.

McCabe also is the subject of several lawsuits by alleged victims in Northern California.
