Chester Priest Moved to Downingtown to Take over for Suspended Clergyman Daily Local News February 21, 2011 http://dailylocal.com/articles/2011/02/21/news/srv0000010979489.txt The Rev. Joseph McLoone from Katharine Drexel in Chester will be replacing Monsignor William J. Lynn at St. Joseph Parish in Downingtown, church officials announced Sunday. A former parochial vicar of St. Katharine of Siena Parish in the Wayne section of Radnor, Lynn was accused by a grand jury with endangering the welfare of children while he was responsible for investigating clerical sexual abuse from 1992 until 2004 under former Philadelphia Archbishop Cardinal Anthony Bevilacqua. Meanwhile, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP) was to host a candlelight vigil Sunday evening on the sidewalk outside the Catholic Cathedral of Ss. Peter & Paul in Philadelphia. In a news release, SNAP says it knows of nearly 200 men and women who committed suicide after having been molested by Catholic clergy. The suffering of one such person, identified as Mark, was described in a newly released Philadelphia grand jury report. SNAP members say they will remember "their fallen brothers and sisters" and are urging others who were sexually assaulted "to break their silence and start their healing." The group offers them reassurance that "they are not at fault, they are not alone and they can get better." SNAP says it also wants to help police and prosecutors successfully convict and jail the four recently charged Philadelphia clerics who have committed or concealed clergy sex crimes. It is risky and wrong for people with knowledge of these crimes to become complacent and stay silent after corrupt clerics are charged, SNAP says. And the group says accused priests often hire top-notch defense lawyers, exploit loopholes, win delays and ultimately get off on technicalities or receive very lenient sentences. SNAP is calling on anyone with information about the alleged wrongdoers to contact law enforcement immediately. |
