Catholic Church Accused of Not Doing Enough against Child Sex Abuse KION February 17, 2011 http://www.kionrightnow.com/Global/story.asp?S=14045524 MONTEREY, Calif- Four people held up signs in Monterey rallying against child sexual abuse after a man came forward claiming he was abused 7 years ago by Father Edward Fitz-Henry. "I don't believe any real changes will happen in the catholic church until the pope himself opens up his secret files. Until they lose diplomatic immunity when it comes to child sexual abuse. Until the world is able to see what has gone on for the past 2,000 years to our kids," said Joelle Casteix, a victim of sexual abuse. Today, at a protest outside the Diocese of Monterey, she said the latest allegations against Father Fitz-Henry are another example of the catholic church dragging its feet. "The vatican reacts slowly, they still release secret documents that encourage bishops to cover up for child abusing clerics and we see it over and over again," said Casteix. Casteix wants more transparency from the church and wants it to open files of priests accused of sexual abuse. Thomas Riordan with the diocese is confused by the request. "I'm not really sure what they're looking for in that we're already doing that. We make those names public, as difficult as it is, we come out with the truth and that's the truth," said Riordan. The diocese put Fitz-Henry on administrative leave when the accusations surfaced but parishioners find them hard to believe. "Especially for me, people like me who had, we still have a very close relationship with the father. I never saw anything out of the ordinary," said Jose Valenzuela. However, there may be other rumors aimed at Fitz-Henry. The victim claims he came forward because he heard rumblings at Madonna del Sasso Church that Fitz-Henry was abusing other children. |
