The Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador has ruled against a man who sued the province for failing to protect him from a priest he alleges sexually abused him as a child.

Louis Rich alleged Roman Catholic priest, Rev. Ronald Bromley, assaulted him in the '70s when he was 12 and 13 and living in the Whitbourne Boys' Home, a correctional institution run by the province.

Bromley, whom Rich alleged assaulted him twice a day, died in 2004.

In a ruling that was issued Monday and released Wednesday , Judge James Adams said Rich not only failed to prove the allegations against Bromley, but even if he did, the provincial government is not legally responsible for what might have happened.
