The Catholic Diocese of Wilmington settles its bankruptcy case with nearly 150 alleged survivors of priest sex abuse.

WDEL's Amy Cherry reports.

The $77 million settlement means the so-called survivors will each get an average of a $530,000.

The seven-year legal battle came to an end late Wednesday night when both sides had reached a settlement.

Any parish defendants of the Diocese involved in separate state court cases will have their cases dismissed.

All of this is still subject to the approval of federal bankruptcy court Judge Christopher Sontchi.

The agreement also calls for documents that were kept secret by the Diocese to be made a permanent part of the public record.

Meantime, survivor John Vai says he believes the verdict in his case convinced Diocese officials they had to avoid other such trials and settle with scores of alleged abuse victims.

Vai says he's satisfied that the church's secret archives will finally be opened, but he noted that diocese officials have yet to personally apologize to any victim of priest sex abuse.
