Bills Would Extend Time for VA Sex Abuse Lawsuits ABC 13 January 27, 2011 http://www.wset.com/Global/story.asp?S=13920099 Victims of sex abuse would have longer to file lawsuits against their attackers under bills making their way through the General Assembly. Victims of child sexual abuse by clergy and advocates for abused children gathered Thursday to call for passage of the bills. Both proposals originally extended the statute of limitations to file civil lawsuits in sex abuse cases from two years to 25 years. The House bill was scaled back to eight years. The Senate bill will be heard later Thursday. Supporters say victims should have at least 15 years to file lawsuits. The limitation is either from the act, from when the victim turns 18 or, in cases where the memories are suppressed, when the victim realizes he or she was abused. |
