Catholic Diocese of Green Bay: We're on Solid Financial Ground By Steve Contorno The Press-Gazette January 14, 2011 http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/article/20110114/GPG0101/110114065/Green-Bay-diocese-We-re-on-solid-financial-ground [with copy of the letter] In a letter recently distributed this week to its parishes, the Catholic Diocese of Green Bay stressed that it is on sound financial footing and is not planning to file for bankruptcy. The diocese also noted in the letter with Thursday's date that it is not facing any liability judgments. The letter comes after a Gannett Wisconsin Media story questioned whether the Catholic Diocese of Green Bay could follow a similar path as the Milwaukee's Archdiocese, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection earlier this month amid fraud lawsuits fueled by sex abuse cover-ups. In its letter from the Catholic Foundation for the Diocese of Green Bay, the diocese emphasized its solid financial standing. The Catholic Foundation distributes grants from more than 100 restricted funds as designated by donors to benefit parishes, schools and other Catholic organizations. "The Diocese of Green Bay continues to implement a strong, ethical program of financial stewardship, and we have operated with a balanced budget, even during difficult economic times," the diocese said. "Our current financial status is stable and we continue to operate our various diocesan offices with a disciplined approach to our annual budget." Like the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, the Catholic Diocese of Green Bay is facing two civil suits stemming from a sex abuse scandal involving a former priest. The Green Bay diocese, however, said that it has been forthcoming regarding those lawsuits and its goal has been to "get to the truth of the matter and let the truth prevail." On Friday, diocese spokesman Deacon Ray DuBois only said: "I think (the letter) says it all." Contact: scontorno@greenbaypressgazette.com |
