SNAP Press Release

For immediate release Tuesday, January 11, 2011

Statement by David Clohessy, Executive Director of SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests. 314 566 9790 SNAPclohesssy@aol.com

Clergy sex victims respond to DE bishop’s proposal

Malooly must understand it’s a new day. Victims are smarter and more determined than ever to prevent future clergy sex crimes and cover ups. So making promises and writing checks doesn’t cut it anymore. He must show tangible proof that he’s reforming, and thus far, we still aren’t seeing that.

One could easily drive a truck through some of the loopholes in Malooly’s latest proposal.

Only now, in the wake of a $3 million jury verdict and the chance of more devastating trials, does Malooly finally take a few belated and begrudging steps forward. Still, he postures, calling these small moves “voluntary,” when, in fact, he’s virtually been forced to start taking action. It’s a shame that it takes dozens of lawsuits before he’ll make vague promises to write apologies to and stop using words like “alleged” to refer to child sex abuse victims.

It’s just disingenuous for Malooly to exploit bankruptcy laws to keep clergy sex cover ups covered up and then complain about how much he’s paying lawyers every month.

(SNAP members will hold a 1 p.m. news conference in Wilmington outside the chancery office to give more reaction to the proposal. For details: Joelle Casteix 949 322 7434)
