Valletta, Malta - Seven Maltese men who claim they were sexually molested by priests in the 1980s have written to Pope Benedict XVI complaining about delays in justice.

The Maltese Church has failed to take action against three priests, even though, in 2003, they admitted wrongdoing, the men said in their letter, which was made public Saturday.

The priests also stand charged in a criminal court with sexually abusing boys, aged 13 to 16, at an orphanage in the 1980s.

'Why does the Maltese Church still protect these scandals ... We are still suffering injustices after seven years. Please help us,' the men appealed to the pope.

They also expressed disgust that the priests in question have not yet been defrocked.

The seven men, all in their late 30s, met with the pope during a visit to Malta last April in an event which received worldwide media coverage.

In a surprise move last Thursday, the accused priests filed a constitutional case in court claiming they were being unfairly tried by the media.

The spokesman for the alleged victims, Lawrence Grech, said the priests' decision to open a constitutional case was a delaying tactic to further postpone justice.
