The fund-strapped Archdiocese of Milwaukee has been offered a new financial partnership from an unexpected source: People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

PETA sent a letter to the archdiocese Thursday offering to "pay a reasonable sum, which will help a bit as the diocese restructures its finances."

But there's a catch. In return for the unspecified amount of money, PETA would require the archdiocese to erect a statue of Jesus holding a lamb with the inscription: "Blessed Are the Merciful-Go Vegan."

Julie Wolf, a spokeswoman for the archdiocese, said Archbishop Jerome Listecki had not yet read PETA's letter and so could not immediately respond to it.

The archdioceses announced this week that it would declare bankruptcy due to lawsuits over the handling of clergy sex abuse cases.
