MILWAUKEE, Wis. (WTAQ) - The Milwaukee Catholic Archdiocese will get more time to submit financial documents as part of its request for bankruptcy.
The church filed for Chapter 11 re-organization on Tuesday.
Wednesday, Bankruptcy Judge Susan Kelley granted the church's request for a 20 day extension to file statements about its financial condition. That deadline is now February 7th.
The Milwaukee Archdiocese, which serves 10 counties, says it does not have the assets to pay the claims of those who said they were sexually abused by priests a number of years ago. Over a dozen lawsuits are pending.
During questioning Wednesday, an attorney for the victims started making an argument that local parishes are run by the archdiocese – and therefore, are liable in the lawsuits.
But Judge Kelley cut off the questioning, saying it wasn't germane to Wednesday's proceeding. Archbishop Jerome Listecki has said that local Catholic parishes and schools would not be affected by the bankruptcy, since they're separate legal entities.
