MILWAUKEE (WXOW) -- An attorney representing alleged victims of clergy sexual abuse says he believes the Milwaukee archdiocese is filing for bankruptcy in order to protect secret files and delay pending lawsuits.

The Milwaukee Archdiocese said Tuesday it had filed for bankruptcy protection because it cannot pay debts incurred in sexual-abuse lawsuits.

Attorney Jeff Anderson of St. Paul, Minn., represents 23 people who are suing the archdiocese. He says the archdiocese is trying to protect the names of the priests and other church officials who covered up the crimes. Anderson says bankruptcy would allow the archdiocese to keep these names secret.

Anderson joins others in calling for the archdiocese to make its personnel files public.
