The Boy Scouts of America and the Archdiocese of Boston have suspended a volunteer Braintree reident who is accused of sexually abusing a child.

Michael J. Cimmino, 54, of 400 Commercial St. was arrested on the afternoon of Jan. 1 after police investigated a report from a minor child known to Cimmino that he was touched inappropriately while at Cimmino’s home shortly before the disclosure, Deputy Chief Russell Jenkins said.

When Cimmino was arraigned in Quincy District Court on Jan. 3, he pleaded innocent to eight counts of indecent assault and battery on a person under the age of 14 and single counts of assault with intent to rape a child and kidnapping.

Cimmino is being held at the Norfolk County Jail on $50,000 cash bail. He is due in court again on Feb. 2 for a probable cause hearing.

Judge James McGovern issued a list of conditions with which Cimmino must comply, if released. He could have no contact with the alleged victim or the alleged victim’s family; could not use drugs or alcohol and submit to random testing; would have to stay away from children 17 and younger including his own children, and could not engage in work or volunteer to work with children 17 and younger.

The judge also ordered that Cimmino would have to abide by any restraining orders that are issued.

Both the Boy Scouts and the archdiocese suspended Cimmino from his volunteer roles as soon as they learned of the charges against him. Both groups require volunteers to undergo criminal record checks and child protection training.

Cimmino had been the cubmaster of Pack 22, which is chartered by First Congregational Church in Braintree.

Richard Stritzinger, the Scout executive for the Old Colony Council of the Boy Scouts of America, said that Cimmino passed both a state criminal record check and a national check conducted by the group and has been a Scout leader for about three years.

During his suspension, Cimmino is barred from any affiliation with the Boy Scouts.

Terrence Donilon, spokesman for the archdiocese, said that Cimmino has volunteered at St. Thomas More Church for several years and cleared the annual state criminal record check last year.

“The archdiocese is working closely with the pastor and staff at St. Thomas More to provide whatever support the parish may need during this difficult time,” Donilon said in a statement.
