Diocese of Worcester Releases Annual Report for Fy2010 Roman Catholic Diocese of Worcester December 23, 2010 http://www.worcesterdiocese.org/communcation/PressReleasesMenu/FY2010AnnualReportRelease/tabid/1054/Default.aspx [consolidated financial statement] December 17, 2010, WORCESTER, MA -- Following a complete audit of its financial accounting, the Diocese of Worcester has issued online and printed editions of the annual report detailing activities for the fiscal year ending August 31, 2010. In his letter, the Most Rev. Robert J. McManus, S.T.D., Bishop of Worcester, expressed his gratefulness to "the generosity of all our parishioners and benefactors, without whom our Diocese could not flourish." He noted that despite the significant economic challenges, the report demonstrated many strengths. "The Annual Partners in Charity Appeal raised $4,807,782." He also noted that "those who manage our departments and agencies were, for the most part, able to operate with balanced budgets last year" resulting in an operational gain of $161,293. The Diocesan Expansion Fund also ended the year on a positive note. Thanks in great part to its diversification of funds and unrealized gain, it reported revenue over expenses of $1,328,146. A continuing challenge that stands out in the Bishop's letter is Priests' Retirement care. Bishop McManus noted that, even with a $500,000 subsidy from Partners in Charity, "retirement programs for clergy were underfunded last year by $1,024,009." The only area he noted which receives greater support from Partners in Charity is seminarian education and related programs for Vocations to the Priesthood. The report is accompanied by an interview with managers of strategic departments and agencies in the diocese, which discusses major challenges the Diocese of Worcester is facing as it looks to the future while remaining focused on its mission of evangelization. Challenges including pastoral planning, changing societal values regarding marriage and the family, and the impact of social media re discussed. The Annual Report with its associated Financial Reports on Operating Activities is being distributed as a supplement in this weekend's parish bulletins and is posted online at www.worcesterdiocese.org. A complete copy of the auditor's report is also available online. This year's report was audited, as in recent years, by O'Connor, Maloney & Co., P.C. of Worcester. Partners in Charity revenue appearing in the report was raised in the 2009 campaign and was disbursed to 29 agencies, ministries, and programs. They included Catholic Charities, Grant-in-Aid for Catholic School Students, Haitian Apostolate Ministry and Religious Education. With the influx of a subsidy of $143,614 from Partners in Charity, the St. John Cemetery System showed a balanced report. Central Catholic Schools operations totaled $13,535,807 resulting in revenues of $260,286 over operational expenses prior to accounting for depreciation, and non-operational funding and loans. Central Catholic (C.C.) Schools include the financial activity of the Holy Name C.C. Jr./Sr. High School, St. Bernard C.C. High School, and St. Peter-Marian C.C. Jr./Sr. High School, as well as St. Peter C.C. Elementary School. There were 2,132 students in those four schools during FY2010. The Catholic Free Press operated with a loss of $87,797. A complete list of all revenues and expenditures by agency or ministry is available online at www.worcesterdiocese.org and in the printed Annual Report supplement in parish bulletins. The online report includes links to supplemental reports. The document was prepared internally for publication by the Office of Communications.
