Two victims come forward

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) - A lawsuit was filed today against New Haven-based Knights of Columbus. Two victims claim they were sexually abused by the leader of their youth group in Texas.

The alleged abuse happened from 1970 through 1986 in Brownsville, Texas.

The Knights of Columbus operate a youth program, known as the Columbian Squires, for Catholic boys between the ages of 10-18. Two men say they were sexually abused by Julian Rivera, the adult leader of the Columbian Squires.

One victim claims that Rivera sexually abused him at gunpoint, and also threatened to kill his family if he did not comply with Rivera’s demands. Rivera also allegedly provided the boys with alcohol and pornography and "shared" his victim with another Columbian Squires leader.

The lawsuit also claims that Rivera was the leader of the Squires until recently, despite a 1986 report to two different Knights of Columbus officials.

The Knights say they were made aware of the allegations in December of 2009 and that they removed Rivera from the organization immediately and contacted authorities in Texas.
