The nun who was Iona College's top financial officer has been formally charged with embezzling $1.2 million over the last decade, federal investigators announced tonight.

Marie E. Thornton, allegedly diverted money from the college for her personal use by using false vendor invoices and submitting credit card bills for personal expenses to be paid by Iona College, the U.S. Attorney's Office said.

"Sister Susie," as Thornton was known on campus, surrendered this morning and was presented in Manhattan federal court today.

A Journal News investigation in October reported that Thornton, the college's former vice president of finance, was suspected of stealing more than $800,000 from the college.

The college's administration attempted to cover it up, never reporting the incident to the New Rochelle police or the Westchester District Attorney's Office, a supplemental 2008 tax form indicated.
