DETAILS Yesterday, the Associated Press reported that several civil child sex abuse and cover up lawsuits were quietly settled involving a large Catholic religious order whose regional headquarters is in a Chicago suburb. The cases centered on Brother Charles Anthony "Raimond" Rose, who molested at least one child in Chicago, taught at a Chicago parochial school, and lived for the last eight years in Chicago. SNAP has learned that 16 cases involving Rose were resolved weeks ago with no fanfare or public announcement. Rose belongs to the Christian Brothers. Yesterday, the AP also reported that the now #2 Christian Brother official in the world lied in writing to a Rose victim in 1995, claiming that Rose "had been forbidden from contact with anyone under 18." In fact, at that time, Rose was working at a state juvenile facility in Minnesota, where he abused at least one boy. SNAP now wants the writer of that letter, Brother Thomas Johnson (who is now in Rome), to be disciplined by the Pope. (From 2002 until earlier this year, Rose lived in a church facility near the De La Salle Institute, a high school for boys where he taught from 1960-63 and again from 1966-68. But church officials now say he's been sent to an undisclosed location in Pennsylvania. For the sake of public safety, SNAP believes Rose' bosses should tell the public and parishioners his whereabouts, so they can better protect their children.) Four more abuse suits against Rose and the Christian Brothers were filed last month and one was filed in October. This summer, five men filed similar suits charging that Rose abused them at two Minnesota Catholic schools. In 2003, Rose was also sued for molesting a California child. In 2004, that civil case settled for $ 1.1 million. A hearing in one of the pending cases is set for Monday in Minnesota. Rose has worked for the Christian Brothers for at least five decades.
