Residential school survivors met with members of Anglican, Presbyterian, United and Catholic churches from Dec. 3 to 5 as a part of Open Hearts, Clear Minds: a Road to Reconciliation forum organized by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada and Aboriginal Neighbours of Victoria.

Approximately 250 survivors and parishioners met at the University of Victoria’s First People’s House and participated in discussions around aboriginal residential schools once operated primarily by members of the four churches. Both sides were represented equally in the event aimed at fostering healing for the victims.

“It accomplished what we set out to do, which was have the survivors’ stories heard by non-aboriginal people,” said Ruth D’Hollander, vice chairperson of Aboriginal Neighbours.

“They felt they were heard, appreciated the opportunity to speak and they want a lot more of (those opportunities).”
