MILWAUKEE -- For the first time, an active member of Milwaukee's archdiocese is urging his church to make some upcoming testimony in a priest sex abuse case public.

An attorney for Bishop Richard Sklba requested Sklba's testimony be sealed in a pending priest abuse lawsuit.

However, a victims' group argues hearing from Sklba will help victims and church members heal. The Rev. James Connell, the archdiocese's vice-chancellor, agrees.

"It will help. It will absolutely help bring about the healing survivors deserve, their parents and families deserve, the church deserves and the community at large," Connell said.

The archdiocese said Sklba's personal attorney asked the deposition be sealed, not the archbishop.

The archdiocese said it's been transparent by posting all known priest abusers on its website.
