An official of the Milwaukee Archdiocese says he hopes an upcoming deposition done for priest abuse lawsuits is made public, counter to what another church leader apparently wants.

Father James Connell is a pastor of two Catholic churches in Sheboygan. He's also vice-chancellor of the Milwaukee Archdiocese-- a position he describes as midway up the local church hierarchy. Connell is asking that a request to seal the upcoming deposition of Auxiliary Bishop Richard Sklba be dropped. Clergy abuse victims say Sklba helped the Archdiocese cover up many cases of clergy abuse of children. Father Connell says Sklba's deposition should be made public.

Connell says if the courts agree to seal Sklba's deposition, Sklba should speak up anyway. Connell says he's not worried about the Milwaukee Archdiocese punishing him for his requests.

John Pilmaier of the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP) says it would help him as a victim to hear what Sklba has to say.

The website of the Milwaukee Archdiocese has posted a statement that says Sklba’s personal attorney made the request to seal the deposition, and that the request did not come from the archdiocese. The church also says the Archdiocese and the attorney for the victim/survivors agreed to a confidentiality provision during a recently started mediation process.
